EU disburses €600 million in macro-financial assistance to Ukraine

Today, the European Commission has, on behalf of the EU, disbursed €600 million in macro-financial assistance (MFA) to Ukraine to address the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the second and final tranche under Ukraine’s current MFA programme following the first €600 million disbursement in December 2020. With this final one, the amount of loans to Ukraine under its multiple MFA programmes reaches €4.4 billion.

The disbursement is based on the Commission’s positive assessment of the Ukrainian authorities’ progress implementing agreed policy measures under the COVID-19 MFA programme relating to public finance management, governance, rule of law, improving the business climate, sectoral reforms, and state-owned enterprises.

Ukraine has also made progress implementing agreed policies under its associated programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in particular in the judicial area. The IMF successfully concluded its programme review mission on 18 October 2021.

“By providing financial and technical support, the EU is helping improve living standards for the Ukrainian people. By providing strong political support, we are strengthening Ukraine’s integration with the European Union,” said Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President for an Economy that Works for the People.

This disbursement is part of the €3 billion emergency MFA package for ten enlargement and neighbourhood partners, which aims to help them limit the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
