The EU-funded market-building project in Eastern Europe, Collaborate for Impact, has shared a publicly available version of Underseen, an EU-funded documentary film about the Museum in the Dark in Ukraine.
The EU-funded ‘Collaborate for Impact’ project has been ongoing since 2020 and is now coming to an end. The programme, initiated by Impact Europe, brings together national partners from Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia in a five-year endeavour to help promote the social economy, set up impact funds and support social entrepreneurs in the Eastern Partnership.
Underseen tells the story of Alina, the founder of a museum run by the visually impaired, as she navigates the meaning of her ‘Museum in the Dark’ in the darkness of wartime. Alongside other strong Ukrainian women, she works to build a more socially inclusive future for Ukraine. The museum is one of the portfolio companies of the Ukrainian Social Venture Fund, which was set up within the framework of the Collaborate for Impact project.
“The museum itself exists to reverse roles: sighted visitors are led into total darkness by visually impaired guides, who help them navigate by sound, touch, and intuition,” says a press release by Impact Europe.
“Sound and vibration became ways to express space and emotion,” Rafael Cortes, film director, explains. “We aimed to depict what cannot be seen. It’s about more than showing – it’s about feeling, sensing, entering a space where vision is not the dominant mode.”
The 25-minute documentary is a production by Impact Europe and DEIA Media, made possible through the financial support of the European Union.
